Staff Software Engineer (Payments)

About the role

GoFundMe is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join its Payments organization. The role focuses on building and scaling next‑generation payments infrastructure, handling billions of dollars in transactions, and bringing core payments capabilities in‑house.

Key responsibilities

• Refine and execute GoFundMe's multi‑year payments strategy, designing end‑to‑end payout solutions from ideation to launch.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, and external partners to create next‑generation payments infrastructure.
• Own critical technical decisions across ledgering, money movement, and disbursement, anticipating future use cases.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and advocate for codebase improvements.
• Lead projects from conception to completion, balancing technical trade‑offs and business needs while communicating progress to stakeholders.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience in payment systems, including checkout, payouts, ledgering, reconciliation, KYC/onboarding.
• Proven ability to architect services using well‑accepted design patterns for future scaling.
• Strong experience diagnosing and preventing performance problems with monitoring tools.
• Demonstrated leadership in leading projects and mentoring teams.
