Telephone Operator – Hospital Switchboard

About the role

The Switchboard Operator provides courteous and efficient telephone, paging and inquiry services for Concordia Hospital. Working on a day shift with a part‑time schedule (5.5 hours per day, 0.70 FTE), the role supports the Health Information Services department and contributes to smooth communication across the facility.

Key responsibilities

• Answer and route incoming calls, pages and messages for hospital staff and visitors.
• Provide accurate information and respond to general inquiries.
• Maintain call logs and ensure timely follow‑up on messages.
• Operate the hospital’s ATD (Automatic Telephone Distribution) system.
• Assist with basic administrative tasks as needed.

Required profile

• Minimum one year of experience as a telephone operator or receptionist, preferably in a healthcare setting.
• Grade 12 education; a Medical Terminology certificate is an asset.
• Ability to prioritize workload, work independently and make effective decisions.
• Clear verbal and written English communication skills.
• Successful completion of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check, Vulnerable Sector Search, Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check.

Required skills

• Proficiency with an ATD (Automatic Telephone Distribution) application.
• Strong command of the Windows operating environment.
• Accurate typing speed of at least 40 words per minute.
• Familiarity with medical terminology (preferred).
