Software Architect – Containers & Virtualisation

About the role

Canonical is seeking a Software Architect to lead the design and evolution of LXD and MicroCloud, its container and virtual machine orchestration platform. The role focuses on making clusters of compute work seamlessly, from a single server to large deployments.

Key responsibilities

• Drive architecture, design and evolution of LXD and MicroCloud.
• Mentor and develop colleagues, reviewing code and ensuring security and performance.
• Contribute to high‑level management REST API, CLI and low‑level kernel work.
• Represent technical leadership within Canonical and its open‑source communities.

Required profile

• Outstanding academic record with a degree in Computer Science or a STEM field.
• Proven technical leadership and ability to motivate teams.
• Self‑organized, self‑starting and able to deliver on schedule.
• Professional communication in English, both written and spoken.

Required skills

• Strong experience with Go (Golang) and C programming languages.
• Deep knowledge of storage, networking and virtualization technologies.
• Experience with container technologies and concurrent, distributed systems.
• Proficiency with Linux, preferably Debian/Ubuntu.
