Freelance Managing Editor – PhD in History

About the role

A prestigious publishing client seeks a freelance Managing Editor with a PhD in History to oversee editorial decisions across multiple journals. The role is project‑based, offering flexible hours and remote work.

Key responsibilities

• Assess manuscript suitability, issue revision and final decisions after peer review.
• Evaluate reviewer reports, request additional reviews when needed.
• Synthesize feedback into clear decision letters and ensure consistency across submissions.
• Collaborate with publishers, desk editors, and reviewer‑selection support via email.
• Maintain decision turnaround of ≤5 business days and respond to queries within 2 business days.
• Provide KPI reporting and participate in performance reviews.

Required profile

• PhD in History with 3‑5 years of active research experience.
• At least 3‑5 English‑language publications in the last 5 years, including 2 in the last 2 years, without retractions.
• First or last author on listed publications.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of editorial management systems such as ScholarOne, EM, SNAPP, or REX.
