Backend Engineer – Foundation Services

About the role

Backblaze is looking for a Backend Engineer to join its Foundation Services team. You will help build highly available APIs that manage identity, access, and integrations at massive scale, while leveraging AI‑assisted development tools to accelerate delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable Java services and APIs.
• Implement authentication, account management, and external partner integration logic.
• Integrate AI coding agents (e.g., Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code) into the development workflow.
• Participate in the full software lifecycle: estimation, design, development, testing, and delivery.
• Collaborate with QA, Finance, Marketing, Product, Support, and Security teams to gather requirements and ensure successful implementation.
• Diagnose complex production issues and maintain system stability.
• Conduct code reviews and contribute to design discussions.

Required profile

• Proven track record delivering functional components in complex systems.
• 3+ years of professional experience with Java and backend development.
• Experience using AI‑assisted development tools such as Gemini, Cursor, or Claude Code.
• Familiarity with modern data stores and observability tools (Vitess, Cassandra, Redis, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenSearch).
• Comfortable working in Docker‑based container environments and cross‑platform development (Mac for Linux targets).
• Strong understanding of HTTP principles and secure access best practices.
• Motivation to learn new technologies and grow toward senior technical contributions.
