Assisted Living Surveyor – Nurse Consultant I

About the role

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is seeking a Nurse Consultant I to serve as an Assisted Living Surveyor. Based in the Eastern Region, you will work from home while conducting on‑site inspections of licensed adult‑care homes and overnight respite programs to ensure compliance with state licensure rules.

Key responsibilities

• Perform independent and team‑based inspections of assisted living facilities and overnight respite programs.
• Analyze survey findings, determine compliance with statutes and licensure rules, and document results in a legally defensible manner.
• Provide technical assistance and guidance to facilities, prospective providers, and county Department of Social Services staff.
• Communicate inspection outcomes verbally and in writing to facility personnel, staff, and the public.
• Travel within the assigned counties, including occasional overnight stays, using a state‑provided, rental, or personal vehicle with reimbursed expenses.

Required profile

• Current nursing licensure with knowledge of nursing practice, assessment, and care planning.
• Experience applying rules, statutes, or standards in compliance, audit, or accreditation surveys.
• Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to produce clear technical reports.
• Residency in Wake, Lee, Harnett, Cumberland, Hoke, Scotland or adjacent counties.

Required skills

• Understanding of state licensure regulations for adult‑care facilities.
• Ability to conduct field inspections and document findings accurately.
