Traffic Services Technician (Engineering Technician IV)

About the role

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks a Traffic Services Technician at the Engineering Technician IV level to support the Bureau of Operations. This full‑time, salaried position focuses on developing, coordinating, and evaluating experimental traffic control products and managing a variety of transportation‑related maps and standards.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, test, and evaluate experimental traffic control devices.
• Prepare and distribute special Bureau of Operations maps in both digital and hard‑copy formats.
• Update the online Road Construction Map and maintain the Designated Truck Route Map.
• Create and maintain Illinois‑specific highway sign standards.
• Issue blanket bonds for access and utility permits.
• Provide Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) support to the Bureau.
• Assist with traffic engineering studies and the publication of manuals, reports, and policies.

Required profile

• Strong working knowledge of traffic operations and control devices.
• Experience with map preparation and distribution.
• Ability to develop technical standards and documentation.
• Familiarity with permitting processes for utility access.
