Senior Accountant / Assistant Controller

About the role

A mission‑driven nonprofit organization in San Francisco is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant / Assistant Controller to join its finance team. Reporting to the CFO, you will lead an accounting staff member and play a key role in financial reporting, month‑end close, audit preparation, budgeting, and process improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain the general ledger in accordance with GAAP and prepare journal entries.
• Perform account reconciliations, monthly financial reporting, and support month‑end and year‑end close.
• Reconcile bank, investment, and balance‑sheet accounts; manage cash balances and banking activity.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and audit schedules.
• Process vendor payments, manage accounts receivable, and ensure proper coding of transactions.
• Identify and implement process automation and workflow improvements.
• Document accounting policies, support system enhancements, and provide guidance to accounting staff.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
• Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and communication skills.
• Experience supervising staff and improving processes.
• Preferred nonprofit accounting experience and familiarity with Financial Edge.
