Medical Laboratory Technician – Histology

About the role

The Histology Department at Awanui Labs in Nelson is seeking a dedicated Medical Laboratory Technician on a fixed‑term, full‑time basis (80 hours per fortnight). You will work both independently and as part of a team, handling specimens, operating laboratory equipment, and ensuring high‑quality results for our diagnostic pathology services.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, process, and store specimens, giving priority to urgent cases.
• Organise work to meet established turnaround times and deadlines.
• Perform histology tests according to departmental protocols.
• Set up and operate laboratory equipment following method manuals.
• Carry out equipment checks, calibrations, maintenance, and quality‑control activities, reporting any issues.
• Use the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to generate work lists and enter data accurately.

Required profile

• Methodical approach with strict adherence to quality procedures.
• Team‑oriented with initiative, strong communication skills, and ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
• Excellent attention to detail and reliable record‑keeping.
• Ability to work independently while receiving support when needed.
• Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practicing Certificate (or in the process of obtaining one).
• Eligibility to work in New Zealand and willingness to participate in evening and weekend rosters.
