Senior Java Backend Engineer – Relocation to Spain

About the role

Talan is seeking a Senior Java Backend Engineer to join its Spain office and help shape the technical evolution of its platform. This position focuses on designing, building, and improving scalable backend services while driving engineering best practices.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot (version 3 or higher).
• Build and maintain REST APIs following an API‑first approach with OpenAPI specifications.
• Apply clean architecture principles and software design patterns for maintainable, extensible systems.
• Optimize the persistence layer using Hibernate/JPA and improve data modeling.
• Identify technical debt and structural issues, proposing practical, sustainable solutions.
• Promote code quality, engineering best practices, and continuous improvement within the team.
• Collaborate with frontend developers and cross‑functional teams to deliver clear, well‑documented APIs.
• Participate in architectural discussions and technical decision‑making.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience developing backend applications with Java.
• Strong experience with Spring Boot 3 or higher.
• Solid understanding of software design patterns and engineering best practices.
• Hands‑on experience with Hibernate/JPA and data modeling.
• Experience designing REST APIs using OpenAPI and API‑first methodologies.
• Passion for code quality, maintainability, and scalable software design.
• Proactive mindset with the ability to constructively challenge ideas.
• Fluent proficiency in English.
