Lead Backend Data Engineer

About the role

Blend is looking for a Lead Backend Data Engineer to design and build scalable Java‑based backend systems that process large volumes of data. The role combines deep technical expertise in concurrency, distributed architectures, and big‑data pipelines with leadership responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable backend services in Java, focusing on reliability, performance and multi‑service integration.
• Lead the architecture of distributed systems and high‑throughput data pipelines using Apache Spark and Airflow.
• Develop concurrent, multi‑threaded applications with advanced synchronization patterns.
• Build and maintain containerized workloads on Kubernetes, defining deployment and scaling strategies.
• Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers on best practices, system design and performance optimization.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define APIs, service contracts and integration patterns.
• Implement observability solutions with Grafana, Prometheus or Loki and support production deployments.

Required profile

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with strong Java expertise.
• Proven experience designing and operating large‑scale distributed systems.
• Deep knowledge of concurrency, thread synchronization and performance profiling.
• Strong SQL skills and ability to design efficient queries and schemas.
• Hands‑on experience with Apache Spark, Apache Airflow and Kubernetes.
