Senior Squad Technician – Engineering Technician IV

About the role

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking a Senior Squad Technician (Engineering Technician IV) to lead the preparation of design reports, plans, and specifications for highway improvement projects. This full‑time, salaried position focuses on delivering high‑quality technical documentation and CADD drawings while supporting project coordination with external agencies.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee technical aspects of project report and plan preparation for roadway improvement projects.
• Produce accurate Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) drawings, project reports, and contract plans that meet standards and deadlines.
• Assemble complete plan sets, ensuring proper quantity scheduling and application of design standards.
• Instruct staff on drafting techniques, report preparation, and departmental procedures.
• Prepare exhibits for coordination with outside agencies and public meetings.
• Perform duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.

Required profile

• Relevant engineering or technical degree or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated experience in highway or infrastructure design and CADD production.
• Ability to supervise and train junior staff.
• Understanding of state transportation standards and specifications.
• Union‑affiliated position; compliance with collective bargaining agreement.
