Nurse Consultant – Nursing Home Surveyor (Durham Area)

About the role

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is seeking a Nurse Consultant I to serve as a Nursing Home Surveyor for Durham and surrounding counties. This home‑based position involves conducting regulatory inspections of nursing facilities to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine surveys and complaint investigations at nursing homes across Alamance, Caswell, Durham, Granville, Person, and Rockingham counties.
• Prepare detailed survey reports, including statements of deficiency and findings on complaint allegations.
• Pass the Federal Surveyor Minimum Qualifications Test (SMQT) after completing required training.
• Travel an average of three days per week to inspection sites, with occasional weekend, night‑shift, or overnight assignments when facilities are more than 60 miles from home.

Required profile

• Minimum education and experience as defined in the vacancy announcement.
• Strong clinical background with experience in patient assessment, care planning, and delivery of care.
• Excellent written communication skills and ability to produce technical reports with proper grammar.
• Willingness to work flexible hours and travel as needed.
