Assisted Living Surveyor – Nurse Consultant I

About the role

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is seeking a Nurse Consultant I to serve as an Assisted Living Surveyor. This home‑based position focuses on regulatory oversight of adult care licensure, ensuring assisted living facilities and overnight respite programs comply with state statutes and licensure rules.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct on‑site inspections of licensed adult care homes and overnight respite programs across the Eastern Region of North Carolina.
• Analyze survey findings, determine compliance, and document results in a legally defensible manner.
• Provide technical assistance and guidance to facilities, potential providers, and county Department of Social Services staff.
• Communicate inspection outcomes verbally and in writing to facility personnel, staff, and the public.
• Travel frequently within the assigned counties, using a state, rental, or personal vehicle, with travel expenses reimbursed at state rates.

Required profile

• Current nursing knowledge, including assessment and care planning.
• Experience applying rules, statutes, or standards to ensure compliance, such as participation in state or federal surveys, audits, or accreditation processes.
• Strong written and oral communication abilities, with capacity to produce clear technical reports.
• Residency in Wake, Lee, Harnett, Cumberland, Hoke, Scotland, or adjacent counties.
